Shoot It or Generate It? A Guide to E-commerce Video with Pixelz

Shoot it or generate it? Explore the two ways brands can create scalable e-commerce video with Pixelz.

Video has earned its place on the PDP.

And shoppers seem to agree. 61% say product images and videos are the most important part of a product page when completing a purchase, and 85% say they've been convinced to buy a product or service after watching a video.

A still image can show you what a product looks like. Video can show you what it does. How a dress moves. How a jacket fits when someone turns. How fabric falls, stretches, catches the light, or behaves from an angle you might not get from the standard image carousel.

The problem has always been getting enough of video. Creating product video takes time, budget, equipment, and people — resources that not every studio team has available for every product.

But that's where AI has changed things.

There's now a completely different route to getting video, while traditional production is still very much part of the picture. Maybe you already have a great video team and simply need a better way to scale the post-production. Maybe you already have the product images and want to turn them into motion without adding another shoot. Or maybe the answer is a mix of both.

That's how we think about video at Pixelz too.

So rather than treating shot video and generated video as two separate worlds, this guide looks at both: how our traditional video post-production works, how Image to Video fits in, and which route makes the most sense depending on what you already have and what you're trying to create.

Pixelz Video Post-Production Pixelz AI Image to Video
What you start with Existing video footage from your own video production team Existing product images
What Pixelz does Edits and finalizes supplied footage for e-commerce use Generates short product videos from existing imagery and takes them through aesthetic review and post-production
Do you need to shoot video first? Yes. Footage must already exist No
Best for Brands already capturing product video that need consistent, scalable post-production Brands that want more PDP video without adding a separate video shoot
Specification options Predefined and Custom Specifications Predefined and Custom Image to Video Specifications in the new AI Studio
Available Pixelz workflows Color Only, Composition and Color, Video Custom Image to Video with predefined storyboards or custom clip sequences
Creative input Determined through the original shoot and specification selections Determined by the source images, selected movements, shot types and storyboard
Typical use case Turning raw product footage into polished, consistent PDP video Turning existing fashion imagery into motion for PDPs
Where it fits in the workflow After video capture, the images are uploaded to the Pixelz platform and sent through our post-production process. Pixelz retouches the source images before generation, generates the video, completes an aesthetic review, and then applies a final round of post-production before delivery.
Editorial/campaign? Supports campaign and editorial footage that already exists, with post-production tailored to the brand's creative direction, color, composition, and delivery requirements. Can turn existing editorial or campaign imagery into short motion assets, extending still creative into video without requiring a separate shoot.
Pixelz advantage Repeatable post-production within the same production ecosystem as your image workflow Adds AI-generated motion while keeping review and post-production inside Pixelz

Specifications with Pixelz Video

Whichever route you take, the next question is how to make it repeatable.

That is where specifications come in.

A lot of what makes both video post-production and Image to Video scalable at Pixelz comes down to specifications. You can start with a Predefined Specification, which is essentially a ready-made template built around common e-commerce needs, or go with a Custom Specification if your brand needs something more specific and granular.

The predefined route is there for teams that have simple retouching or want to set up fast. The workflow is already in place, the common production requirements are built in, and you can get started without defining every little detail yourself. On the video side, that might mean choosing a setup for color, composition, or another standard post-production need. With Image to Video, it might mean choosing a ready-made storyboard with the clips and movements already mapped out. We also show you the types of source images each clip needs, including guidance around pose, framing, background, and product visibility, so you know what to capture before you even get to generation. We call this shooting with intent: creating your original imagery with an understanding of how those assets may be used later, whether that is for Image to Video or another AI workflow.

But not every brand works the same way, and sometimes you need more control.

That is where Custom Specifications come in. They let you get much more granular about how the final video should look and how the workflow should behave. Maybe your brand has very specific post-production standards. Maybe you want more say over the storyboard, clip sequence, or movements in an Image to Video workflow. Either way, the specification becomes the place where those preferences live.

And that is really the bigger idea here.

There is no single way to do e-commerce video anymore. Sometimes you already have footage and need someone to take it through post-production. Sometimes you have great product imagery and want to turn it into motion without adding another shoot. Sometimes you will use both.

Pixelz is built to support all of those starting points.

Whether you want something ready to go or something tailored closely to your brand, the goal is the same: make it easier to get more polished, consistent video onto the PDP without making the workflow more complicated than it needs to be.
