When the Moodboard Is Better Than the Show

Last month, I mentioned Gucci’s pre-show “mood board”, a series of AI-generated images that built a lot of intrigue. And to be clear, the images themselves weren’t wildly original. But that wasn’t really the point.

What made it interesting was the signal: that AI was being used as part of the process. A tool for exploring ideas, testing directions, and shaping what might come next. Something we’ve talked about a lot in our own industry as a safe way to start incorporating AI without it being the final product.

So naturally, I expected the runway to take that somewhere bold.

Something more experimental. More boundary-pushing.

Instead, it felt… surprisingly familiar.

Under Demna, the show was polished, but not particularly provocative, at least not in the way I was expecting. The silhouettes, the casting, the overall direction. It all felt closer to a reflection of current fashion than a step beyond it.

And that’s not just a fashion problem. AI tends to echo what is expected before it challenges it.

And perhaps that’s why the final show felt so aligned with current fashion. It was, in a way, a reflection of the system itself.

Which brings it back to the opportunity: AI can help explore new directions. But without intentional direction beyond what’s already familiar, it will often circle back to the average.
