At the time, it was one of the first moments where we felt AI had crossed a line from possible to impressive.
That doesn't mean it was perfect. Far from it, actually.
There were hallucinations. There was a lot of post-production. There were plenty of creative decisions to make along the way. And behind the finished images was a much bigger team and process than you might expect from something labeled "AI-generated."
In fact, one of the most interesting things we learned while building our first Digital Twins was how much of the traditional photoshoot was still there.
We still had real models and a modeling agency. We still had our post-production team. The difference was that we had added an entirely new step to the process: generation.
And that new step opened up a lot of possibilities.
First, What Is a Digital Twin?
A Digital Twin needs to look and feel like the real person, of course. But it also needs to remain consistent across different products, poses, environments, and creative directions. And behind all of that, the real person needs to have given full consent for how their likeness can be used.
That's where things get a little more complicated than just generating an image.
At Pixelz, our Digital Twins are hyper-realistic AI models created from real, consenting people. Once built, they can be used to create everything from lifestyle and editorial imagery to PDP, social, and campaign content, without bringing the model back on set for every new asset.
But getting there takes a lot more than a prompt.
Our workflow brings together the initial photoshoot, isolated training data, AI generation, creative direction, proprietary technology, and expert post-production to take a real person from initial capture all the way through to finished imagery.
Use Cases
But before we get into exactly how we build a Digital Twin, it's worth looking at why you might want one in the first place. Because once the Twin exists, the interesting part is everything you can start creating with it.
Digital Twins give brands a way to keep working with the same model across different products, environments, and creative ideas, without starting from zero every time. Of course, what you can create and what actually makes sense for your brand aren't always the same thing. Building a clear use case can help you figure out where the opportunity really is.
Lifestyle and Editorial Campaigns
This is a big one, particularly for brands creating a steady stream of editorial content for their website, social channels, seasonal drops, campaigns, and everything in between.
Traditionally, every new campaign means another production. New location, new crew, new schedule, new shoot day. With a Digital Twin, you can keep creating with the same model while completely changing the world around them.
Maybe your summer campaign takes place somewhere along the Mediterranean. Your winter story is in the mountains.
It gives creative teams more room to play with locations, lighting, styling, seasons, and ideas without every new concept automatically becoming another photoshoot.
We've been experimenting with this ourselves, creating a whole lookbook of campaign concepts to see just how far you can take the same Digital Twin. Take a look at the Digital Twin Campaign Lookbook we made!
Extending the Value of a Model Relationship
Sometimes the value of a Digital Twin is much more practical.
Imagine working with an athlete who also has to, well, be an athlete. They have training schedules, competitions, travel, recovery, and plenty of other commitments that don't necessarily align with your content calendar.
Or perhaps you regularly work with children, whose time on set is understandably limited. A model becomes pregnant. Someone is traveling. Or the person who has become central to your brand simply isn't available every time you need new content.
A Digital Twin gives you another way to continue that relationship.
Rather than replacing the person, it can extend what you're able to create together. With the right agreements and consent in place, brands can continue producing content using that person's likeness without requiring them to physically return to set for every asset.
For models, athletes, ambassadors, and agencies, that can also create new ways for an existing partnership to generate value.
Yes, They Can Go on the PDP Too!
Digital Twins aren't only for big campaign moments.
They can also be used much closer to the everyday e-commerce workflow.
A brand could use the same model or ambassador across PDP imagery, for example, creating new on-model content as products arrive without scheduling a new shoot every time.
That could mean putting an ambassador into product imagery, expanding the number of products shown on a particular model, creating additional poses or styling variations, or bringing more consistency across a catalogue.
So while the finished image might look like a fairly traditional PDP shot, the way you got there can be very different.
And We're Probably Missing a Few...
There are plenty of other reasons a brand might choose a Digital Twin over a fully synthetic AI Model (vice versa, too!), and we don't think we've discovered all of them yet.
These are simply some of the use cases we've seen through our own work with Digital Twins so far.
Have another idea? Let us know. We're always interested in trying something new.
And now that we've covered what you can do with one, let's get into the fun part: how do we actually create a Digital Twin?
How It Works: The Digital Twin Workflow
Digital Twins take AI models one step further. Instead of selecting from a synthetic model library, brands can work with a consistent, reusable, real-made digital identity with a model likeness that can be styled, posed, and placed into new creative scenarios on demand.
Model Selection
The process begins with choosing your model.
Brands can select from an existing curated model library, featuring real talent who have an agreement with our Digital Twin solution. Alternatively, we can create a Digital Twin of a model you already work with — aka building a digital version of an existing person.
Usage rights operate much like traditional model contracts. Scope, duration, geography, and channels are clearly defined through agreement, ensuring transparency and protection for both brand and talent.
Through our shared partnership with dedicated agencies, we can facilitate and manage these agreements. If you already have direct relationships with models, we're equally able to work within that framework to create a Digital Twin under mutually agreed terms.
This ensures creative flexibility while maintaining the contractual structure and professionalism of traditional casting.
Product Images
To create a digital version of your garment, we require a minimum of five images per product from different angles. These images allow us to accurately reconstruct the garment on the Digital Twin.
We can handle the retouching within our workflow, or work from already-retouched assets, depending on your existing setup.
As with all generative outputs, quality input directly impacts quality output. The cleaner and more consistent the base imagery, the stronger the final result.
Creative Brief
Next comes the creative direction.
You provide a brief outlining the look and feel you want to achieve. This can include guidance around lighting, pose, mood, environment, color profile, styling direction, or campaign context.
We translate that brief into a structured prompt within our Digital Twin workflow, interpreting it through both a creative and technical lens.
Generation & Post-Production
We then combine the Digital Twin with the digital garment reconstruction to generate imagery based on the agreed creative direction. But generation is only one part of the process.
Each image goes through a dedicated aesthetic and technical review, a quality-control layer built specifically for generative workflows. Here, specialists assess proportions, garment behavior, lighting realism, and overall brand alignment. If something feels off creatively or technically, adjustments are made before moving forward.
From there, the image goes into our post-production (check out why your AI images need post!), including color alignment, shaping adjustments, and final quality checks.
Depending on scope and volume, final images can be delivered in as little as just a few days.
Assets are prepared for web, social, or campaign use, ready to integrate into your existing content ecosystem.
